The redesigned FKB is coming soon and I need your help!

I love the FKB and your beautiful kitchens... but the manual updates are just too time-consuming. When the FKB was first designed (way back in 2005) Web. 2.0 had just started to take off; there weren't many web applications besides blogs that allowed users to interact with a website. Heck blogger didn't even support categories back then! (Hence the use of the difficult "del.icio.us" for categories.)

But, of course, all that is changed now.
So I've been playing around with different web apps for a new FKB and have found a solution that makes managing it much easier: a site where users can upload and categorize their own kitchens. You would need to register with the site, then add all your own kitchen details and photos.

The best part about this new site is it would allow users to search multiple categories (an enhancement folks have been requesting for years). So you could easily find all budget kitchens with maple cabinets.... or all kitchens with white cabinets, soapstone countertops and black appliances.... or all kitchens with light wood cabinets and open shelving. You get the idea.

The new site is almost ready to be published. But once the site goes "live" I don't want to make any major changes to the categories; I'd like to finalize them now.

I have a test site where you can view all the categories. (There are LOTS of them... split into 12 pages.)
Can you please help by checking the new categories before I finalize the FKB? All suggestions are welcome!

To access the categories on the new FKB:
1. Visit the test site at starpooh.com/test
2. Login: userid is "tester", password is "tester" (both without the quotes)
3. Click the tab "Modify/Edit My Kitchen"
4. You should see tester's Kitchen of Handmade Play Kitchens. Click the Edit button.
5. You should see 3 entry forms. The categories are in 2 of the entry forms. (I've disabled the Upload form since it's still a work-in-progress).

Click the button "Add My Kitchen Basics".
Feel free to modify the contents on this form; nothing will be saved since the send button has been disabled.
Click the button "Categorize My Kitchen".
Please go through all 12 of the major kitchen categories. And again feel free to modify the contents on this form since it cannot be saved.

Background:
The kitchen is an entirely new addition to the house. The "old kitchen" (I'll always call it that - haha) is open to the new. If you look at the first photo where the wine fridge is, the opening is to the right. I was strategically taking photos since a corner of that room is a storage area of sorts, so I was trying to get as little of the mess as possible! The side opposite the sofa is actually French doors and 2 windows/bookcases on either side
The ceilings are 9 ft. tall.

The toe kicks are actually stainless - it's simply a very thin layer of stainless steel over wood, rather than solid stainless. The tiny lights in the island toe kick are called plinth lights in the UK, but I couldn't really find a comparable term for the US! I initially found them in British design magazines and had to have them. They serve no useful purpose really and are simply decorative :) They look nice at night with the other lighting dimmed.

Background:

While my kitchen was fine before, I wanted to love being in it. I wanted more room so we removed the island. I've always wanted a Wolf Range and this was the only way I was getting it. We also desperately needed to lighten it up. Because we only have one tiny window and it's on the west side of our house, we don't get much sun.

I LOVE not having that island. The kitchen was simply too small for an island. It was obtrusive and clustered. I never used it to cook on, so I didn't lose any "prep" space. I felt that I couldn't move in the kitchen before

It is where we eat most meals. The kids love using it to do homework. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, so the second island serves many functions for us.

The floating shelves are custom and were made during construction by our trim carpenter.

We built this strawbale house ourselves 14 years ago. Now it is more of a vacation place. At least for the next couple of years. It is in Dripping Springs-outside of Austin. The kitchen has had many lives, but this is the grand finale. I worked with a designer from Wilson appliance who was awesome. However the price tag for cabinets was way too high so we hired a local guy from Buda. He was half the price of Brookhaven.

New "Antique" Kitchen in 1905 Foursquare

Background:

When we bought our 1905 foursquare house in 2004, it was in very original condition with few updates or changes. That was a big part of the appeal for us. The widow who owned the house before us had been here since 1942, and she and her husband had raised their five children here with only one bathroom.

I loved the original kitchen, but it was small and had no dishwasher (and no place to add one), and very limited cabinet and counter space. It also had 4 doorways, a back staircase, and a low window to work around. We made the original kitchen into our breakfast room (changing as little as we could about the space), and built a rear addition with the new kitchen, a small walk-in pantry, powder room, and screened porch. We tried very hard to keep the look and feel of the original kitchen and make a space that fit with the character of the whole house. The new kitchen space is approximately 10' by 17'.

Whenever possible, we incorporated materials that were original to the house, salvaged or antique. The wood floors, lighting, cabinet hardware, sinks in both the kitchen and powder room, doors (to the pantry, powder room and screened porch), and stained glass panel are all old.

Background:
We are more than happy with our decision to use IKEA cabinets. They cost about $6,000 less than a comparable kitchen done with Kraft Maid in maple. Because we saved those dollars we felt comfortable spending more on the soapstone and the backsplash. And we are completely happy with how the cabinets look and function. Who knew I could love full-extension, soft-close drawers so much?

The old kitchen was original to the house, which was built in 1945. The cabinets were painted metal, there was no dishwasher, too little storage, and counters were crowded with microwave, toaster oven, and dish drainer. We lived with it for 15 years (we intended to redo it much sooner but other projects -- two kids not the least of those -- intervened).

The kitchen functioned well, layout-wise, and we left the main elements in place. We removed a strange peninsula at one end of the long side and took the wall between kitchen and dining room (behind the stove in the picture below) down to half-height. We took out a door to the backyard that we never used and replaced it with a window. We took out a hot water heater closet (and put in an on-demand unit that hangs on an exterior wall), which gave us 4 additional linear feet of cabinets and counters.

At the last minute we decided to make a space within our new pantry (white doors at right below) to house the microwave. It got the micro off the main counter and having it out of the way is just fine. The pantry was custom-built to fit in the space of what had been a shallow regular-height closet. Now it gives us floor to ceiling storage.

We pulled the base cabinets next to the refrigerator out 5 inches to keep our existing frig from sticking out; the counters here are about 30 inches deep. We also hung 30-inch-tall uppers here (others are 39-inch) with a floating shelf (of IKEA butcher block) below.

We had a cart built of butcher block and steel from the local welding shop that slides under the counter. The bookshelf above was built of the same materials. The black cabinet at right was built by our carpenter to fit a shallow spot to the right of the new window. One slab of soapstone took care of most of the counters, but using butcher block over this section worked out perfectly.

Sills for the new windows made of soapstone tiles. Much better than the old painted wood.

We had this big blank wall (cabinets here wouldn't have left room for the table where we eat almost all our meals) so we painted a piece of masonite with chalkboard paint and bolted it to the wall. The corkboard covers the circuit box, which would have cost $1500 to move.

We love steel so we had the pass-through top made of 1/2-inch sheet steel.

Our carpenter built the bookshelf and the cart, based on an idea I showed him from a magazine. He was skeptical but it turned out great. The corners of the butcher block are routed out so the steel (which is just angle iron from a local welding shop that we wire-brushed clean and sealed with spray poly) would sit flush.

We painted the toe kicks black. Our contractor said it would make them disappear, which it sort of does. I like that it also echoes the black elsewhere. The carpenters built 2x4 frames for the lower boxes to sit on, rather than using the IKEA leg system. I think it was to make certain that the soapstone was well-supported and to make sure the long run was level, given the inherent unevenness of our 65-year-old floors.

The soapstone and the wood are just shoved as closely together as possible. The butcher block sits on a L bracket that runs from front to back screwed into the side of the cabinet; the wood is attached to the bracket from underneath. We thought about putting a bead of clear silicone on the seam but since that area is rarely used for prep we haven't had any trouble with junk building up in the seam (which is fairly minimal; they did a good job of getting a tight joint).

Background:
We built our house 17 years ago and decided it was time for an update. The original kitchen was very small, closed off, and dark so we took out a large walk-in pantry and knocked down the garage wall and borrowed a 6' X 8' from the garage. This little change made a huge difference and completely transformed our kitchen into an ideal space that looks like it has always been there. It blends very well into the existing dining room and living room giving it a very open look.

I love having lots of light! All of our lighting including the undercabinet can be dimmed. We are extremely happy with the undercabinet Xenon lighting.

Island dimensions are 39" x 86", 42" aisles on both sides, 48" from range.
I wanted the island to look like a farm table. There is plenty of room for seating and for getting through the aisle when people are seated or standing at the island.
Originally I was going to have a prep sink in the island and am glad I opted out because it took up too much valuable storage space.

Background:
The space is different than the original kitchen. Behind the original was a small powder room and tiny laundry room. Each had a window in it. First we did a small addition on the other side of the house for a powder room and big laundry room, then we knocked down the wall and opened up the space. We actually had to move both windows several inches - annoying but well worth it to achieve the symmetry needed.

My GC built the hood. He carved it with wood, covered it with masonite, then sheetrock. Then it was painted, plastered & glazed. The mouldings were all ordered with the cabinetry so it matched. Obviously the guts of the vent cost $, but the hood itself cost me a days labor plus materials, paint, etc.

Background:
We bought our house new in 1981. In 1989 I closed in the deck to create a room for me. The kitchen window over the sink that looked out onto the deck became a leaded glass window looking into my room. At that time I had the upper cabinet doors removed and those cabinets painted and I changed the wallpaper and the vinyl floor as the old floor had not held up well. Nothing has been done to the kitchen since then except for the occasional new appliance as an old one died.

None of this was DIY - neither of us has any talent in that direction.

Since I built in the banquette, I was able to move the peninsula out by about a foot which allowed me to make the island a little longer. Originally the peninsula had what I assume was meant to be a breakfast bar, but it was much too narrow to be used. I had that cut down to make one large area and the overhang now extends out a bit more.

The only extra space I was able to add to the kitchen is at the coffee bar. The space for the frig already extended into the utility room and the space that had the oven and the pantry extended into the garage. I extended the rest of that wall into the garage by the same amount, roughly 6.5 ft x 2.5 ft. That gave me room for a slightly large pantry and for the coffee bar.

Cabinets: white Shaker style, brushed nickel pulls - locally made. The cabinet guys also did the custom woodwork to match our existing woodwork in our older home.
Countertops: Bianco Antico granite (so happy to join this club!! I'm in love. I see new colors and patterns each day)

Background Info:

We undertook a remodel of our kitchen, dining room, laundry room this summer. I have been inspired by the "Big Enough" house movement, and was determined to keep our 2000 sq. ft 1936 house true to itself while meeting the needs of our family of five. After 6 years in our house we decided that we really just needed a slightly larger dining room, and that all of our other needs could be met within the original foot print. The kitchen remains 13x9. The main structural changes we made were to bump the dining room out four feet, move the wall next to the refrigerator back 18 inches to create more space for the island and install larger, more energy efficient doors and windows.
The kitchen footprint stayed the same, but we bumped the DR out 4 ft. The beam in the ceiling of the DR is the old exterior wall.
Pantry: 12" deep, 4 ft wide, 84" tall. The pantry shelves have 3 tier risers. If you had the room, I would suggest 14 inches, because most of the organizer baskets I found won't fit in faced front to back.
The island drawers are 36 inches wide and 8 inches deep.

Background:
The kitchen is 9'3" wide by 9'8" long, so it's not a big space, but it's amazing how much bigger it seems with white cabinets and without that gigantic pantry cupboard blocking the view. The peninsula is 48" long from the wall, leaving me with a little over 36" for the walkway.

This was almost completely diy within the family. My dad's a general contractor and was invaluable to the overall process. My uncle, also a GC, built the cabinets and did the granite. In the space of a week and a half we did all the demo, lighting, electrical, a little plumbing, flooring install, sheetrock patching, painting, cabinets, granite etc. The only thing I hired out was having the sheetrock taped, floated and textured, I know my limits! Because of this, and the powers of the internet for finding deals, the total cost was only $15,000 for everything including appliances.

Here’s what we did:

Knock it down and build it out. Our house is almost 100 years old and as such, the original kitchen was quite small – about 9x10. We have an unusually shaped lot, and the shape allowed for us to be able to knock down an exterior wall and build out.
Make it look unique and up to date but fitting with the rest of the house. The objective was to make the kitchen look like it was always there, with more up to date appliances. To achieve that, we had the cabinets hand-painted and distressed and chose heritage colours. We used reclaimed oak planks for the island countertop; the hardware is a combination of hand-forged cast iron from England and finds from architectural salvage. Countertops and the main sink are soapstone.
Find room for the "library"! An imperative was to find a home for my 300+ (and counting) cookbook collection. We achieved that through clever cabinetry and the acquisition of a beautiful old hutch.

Background Info:
All of the lower cabinets contain drawers or some sort of pullout, except beneath the rangetop and sink: those are regular old cabinet doors. There is also a small "tray" cabinet to the left of the sink for cookie sheets, large cutting boards, etc.

Recessed lighting: It was important that that deep counter have good lighting but, given the height of the cabinet above, it was clear that the lights used there would be visible from just about every spot in the kitchen. My contribution was simply to pick a fixture that would look good when "exposed" and my electrician and cabinet guy worked together to make sure that the recessed opening was just right. (The rest of the kitchen uses the same type of under-cabinet lights, but they are installed in the standard, non-recessed fashion.)

Counter top: Volga Blue granite, aka Spectralite blue, Polare blue. A stone from Ukraine (from the river Volga) that has a black/greyish background with huge splotches of Spectralite crystals, that are blue and silver in different lights.
Backsplash: Himalayan white slate 4x4, mixed with glass 2x2 tiles from Daltile, Midnight and Daylight Shimmer.
Sink: Zero radius, 30X19, single bowl, 16 gauge, undermounted in brushed stainless finish
Faucet: Giagni, pre-rinse, spring faucet

I planned a contemporary kitchen with modern lines and achieved the look. But I was unable to give up my collection of vintage pot 'n pans, pot rack and my grandmother's cookware. SO I incorporated them into modern kitchen- hence the fusion of Old and New!!

Details:

Cabinets: existing oak cabinets were painted with Kelly Moore Durapoxy eggshell finish in Swiss Coffee White.
Countertop: Caesarstone 6600 countertop in Nougat. Quartz embedded stone crystals offer polished shades of grey that match the stainless steel and any shade of white in the kitchen. Mitered eased edge hides any seam with the 2 1/4-inch edge.
Backsplash: tiles are Hakatai, Emperia Series Celestial mosaic blend TR640 - 2 shades of iridescent glass with white marble.
Hardware: crystal knobs and cup pulls from ebay
Main sink: Kohler sink Model # K-3351-L. Found on ebay, right side deeper (10-inch)
Main sink faucet: HansgroheMain
Bar sink: Round Kohler bar sink
Bar sink faucet: Hansgrohe Axor faucet with triple undercounter water filter.
Refrigerator: Jenn-Air white "floating glass" side by side. Cabinet was deepened to match the standard depth refrigerator so it appears cabinet-depth.
Ovens: GE Monogram. Top Advantium oven doubles as a 2nd convection oven or warmer, plus still a microwave.
Cooktop: Jenn-Air electric downdraft stainless
Dishwasher: Miele (it's silent)
Floor: existing solid maple planking, 5-inch wide by a company called Junker. The finish is simple polyurethane (prefinished)
Lighting: Juno mini undercabinet track lighting
Bar stools: Fancy chrome and acrylic bar stools found on ebay.
Wall paint: blue is "Hatteras Haze" from Kelly Moore. The other wall (goes into dining room area) is "Abalone White" from Behr.

Background Info:
We updated what was a mid-80's top-of-the line kitchen to a 2009 kitchen. We replaced the appliances, painted the oak cabinets, and replaced the 80's ivory colored 6-inch tile countertops and backsplashes.
Total cost was only a little over $20K because:
1) We kept our original cabinets by painting them.
2) We purchased all the appliances online and found good deals including no tax.
3) We did some DIY: backsplash, most of electric works, plumbing, and did not hire a general contractor.
4) Our painter is the fastest, most thorough, very affordable wonderful professional. He did the most tedious part of removing the wall papers and all the painting, which would have taken us months.

Cabinets: Painting the existing cabinet was another big decision. It is solid oak but after 25yrs, it was looking dingy. Our painter to use eggshell rather than semi-gloss swiss coffee, which turned out to be crucial. The Eggshell finish gave us much softer, classier tone. (i.e., looks more expensive). I was worried about stains and dirt on white cabinets, but because the dirt and stains show clearly, I can just wipe it with soapy sponge and in 2 seconds, they are gone.

Countertops:
Island countertop: Brushed Limestone.
Perimeter countertop: One of the 'golds' but I forget which. I've seen something very like it recently which was called ' Colonial Dreams'.
Stove: 48' All gas Wolf range.
Hood: Wolf. We had ordered and received the vent-a-hood, but the duct work situation was so complex, that we ended up having to return the VaH and spring the extra money for the Wolf.
Fridge: 36' Stainless Steel Subzero.
Sink: Franke Orca.

Background Info:
We ended up having to sell the house and move due to DH's work, so we never got to put in the backsplash. : (

Background Info:
The house, built in 1959, contained a kitchen that remained relatively unchanged since that time. Only newer appliances and a few coats of paint altered the space. I kept the square footage of the redesign to the original 11'x11' footprint, but removed one wall so that it's is now open to the family room, atrium and living room. I looked to Jill77's kitchen for inspiration and tried to incorporate a design style in keeping with the rest of the home without breaking the bank.

Warm Contemporary Kitchen with IKEA Cabinets

Cabinets: Ikea Tidaholm oak in black/brown, and Adel birch in medium brown (in pantry area and planning peninsula). Shaker doors. I chose IKEA because I love their organization systems and their Blum tandembox drawers and glides. I assembled all of the cabinets myself and changed the edgebanding to match the door/drawer fronts. I was kind of excited to find "Made in Italy" stickers on all the Tidaholm doors. My GC's carpenter installed the cabinets. All drawers are full extension with soft close.
Countertop: Madura Gold granite
Backsplash: Jeffrey Court's Fire and Ice, enhanced, kashmir grout
Cabinet Hardware: Hickory Hardware pulls
Range: Bluestar 36" RNB 6-burner with island trim. The cabinet run on the range wall is pulled out 3 inches. I have a 4" strip of granite behind the range.
Hood: Futuro Futuro 48" plane (980 cfm) venting through a 6" pipe. Installed 28 3/4in above the range.
Ovens: GE Monogram Advantium over ZET
Dishwasher: Bosch Integra 800 series
Refrigerator: Samsung French door RFG297. We pulled out surrounding cabs to make the fridge look built-in.
"Kid fridge" 24" LG LRBP1031 in Titanium-- love it! Holds the kids' yogurts, drinks, fruit, ice cream, frozen baked goods, ice packs-- and keeps the kids out of my way. In the same footprint as refrigerator drawers, I got twice the space at half the price. Between the Samsung and the LG, I have almost 40 cu. ft. of refrigerator/freezer space.
Prep Sink Disposal: compact Badger disposal, the smallest I could find (we are on septic, so it is just used for the odds and ends I don't scoop out of the sink)."

I kept my old kitchen light fixture and ceiling fixture. I'm still planning on adding a couple of puck lights to the shelf behind the hood-- I have outlets at the tops of the high cabs, with a switch next to the range.

enlarged window
demo'ed wall which we knew had brick behind it--we were just trying to gain width (we got about 5'') but I also love the look!
replaced uppers and oven cab and island (Notice the upper cabs are inset but the lowers are frameless. I was very worried about the uppers being inset and the bottoms being full overlay...but it bothers me not at all.)
reused island to become new peninsula (we cut down the existing top)and converted the cabinets in it to drawers
honed the granite and removed the 4'' backsplash (it couldn't be honed in place anyway)
kept the old appliances, except for ovens and hood
painted everything white

Cream and Gold Traditional Kitchen with Arches

Details:

Cabinets: Home Depot, American Woodmark, Savannah Maple Cream Glaze. We added all the detail to the island. I just went to the paint department and got some paint to match the cabinet door, then used it to paint our homemade picture frame mouldings and bracket. The island legs are actually stair balusters from Home Depot that were like 1/10th the price of buying them from the cabinet line. I also added nice baseboard trim at the bottom of the island.
Hardware: Restoration Hardware for the pulls in Chrome, and Lowes for the Chrome knobs.
Appliances: all from Sears - fridge is Whirlpool Gold CD, DW is Bosch (it came out of the old kitchen, and we just replaced the outer panel to match the other SS colors.), 27" wall oven is Frigidaire, larger range is Jennair downdraft convection, Sharp 24 inch microwave drawer.
Countertop: Kashimir Gold granite (hides everything!!)
Pendant Lights: Pottery Barn Kids in Stainless Steel
Backsplash: 1/2 inch polished marble mosaic (Marfel?)with standard white grout, bought at local tile place. Small bronze squares came from Home Depot. Chair rail came from Home Depot. Rope trim came from Lowes.
Faucet: Builder's grade one that I bought off ebay.
Valance on kitchen window: it's just fabric tacked up and scrunched with safety pins. Check out nestingplacenc.blogspot.com for instructions on this window 'mistreatment'. Awesome!

The old kitchen was about 12x12, and the new one is about 13x17. The island is just over 8 feet long, and 39 inches deep. We moved the sink window and enlarged it, added a walk-in pantry, and a soon-to-be computer nook with pass-thru to the kitchen. The fireplace was removed and then replaced, building it into the room and adding built-in cabinetry and surround sound. :) We installed oak flooring on the entire level. We had to have one support column where we removed a wall, so we just tricked it out a bit with moulding, and then added another 'fake' column on the wall by the stove.

We bought a 1950s ranch that had an addition that included a separate pool house which was 8 years old and decided to remodel the pool house ourselves. We painted cabinets, walls, trim, ceiling in the apartment sized building. The existing real wood cabinets were stained with a light almost orangeish stain and were ugly but otherwise in good shape and were custom made overlay doors with raised panels. The knobs were the same wood as the cabinets.

I followed the instructions and advice mentioned on this forum as much as I could. DH sanded & then I primed with 2 coats of Zinsser water based primer from my local BM store for most of the cabinets.

We used BM Aura flat finish on the walls & used the BM Aura ceiling paint flat finish on the ceiling. The cabinets were primed with Zinsser water based primer and painted BM White Dove in Satin Impervo water based. I used good brushes as directed which were well worth it.

The Aura paint is beautiful. The color is very rich. The smell is not bad at all. As advised by other posters you have to work fast with it and not "work" it much. I did have to use 2 coats for sure even though some posters said they used 1. No way for this color. The color is beautiful and changes throughout the day from gray to blue depending on the light. For all of you posters looking for the perfect gray that is in the blue range in sunlight, I highly recommend it. You would never know by the paint card that it is this pretty. I also tested it before buying the Aura in the regular BM paint, not Aura and it wasn't nearly as vibrant. Because my local store didn't have the Aura machine, they had to order it in but, I can't tell you how happy I am that I did.

The cabinets are a white, white no yellow as far as I can see in the color. Very bright white, not creamy or any other color at all. If you don't want a bright white, don't use this color.

White and Espresso Kitchen With Antique Pendants

Details:

Cabinets: custom cabinetry made by our general contractor's uncle whose company is CD 28 Inc. Cabinet style is inset, recessed panel with concealed hinges. Grooved detail on both the doors and frames (slightly more detailed than a Shaker style). The painted cabinetry is Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and the maple cabinets and island were custom stained to match the dark espresso grain in our hardwood floors.
Countertops: Bianco Antico granite. The base colour is an off-white with deposits of grey quartz, red garnet that looks like crushed red lollipops, black mica and thin sheets of pearly silver. It is 1 ¼” or 3 cm with an eased edge.
Backsplash: Heath Ceramics 2x8 handmade tiles from Ann Sacks in Chalk White with a matte finish. The colour is very white with a grey undertone. We did it in a traditional subway pattern. We went with a white grout as we didn't want the backsplash pattern to compete with the granite. The elongated shape is a modern take on the standard 3x6 subway tile.

~ prep sink: Ticor S705 stainless steel prep sink from Galaxy Tool Supply.
Flooring: red oak hardwood. The stain is a custom mix of mainly Duraseal Ebony and some Minwax Red Mahogany (bizarre mix, I know!)
Paint: The wall colour is Benjamin Moore Natural Cream which is a pale neutral. The painted cabinets, crown molding, baseboards and ceiling are Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace which is a crisp white with a hint of warmth.
Stools: The leather and brushed chrome barstools are from Urban Barn and add a modern touch to the space. I wanted low backs so they don’t interfere with the view from the kitchen to the family room.

The Rev-a-Shelf mounts to the floor of the cabinet, the Ikea units to the cabinet walls. Cut down the Ikea units to fit.

Floors - Original 1930 tongue-in-groove fir, sanded, repaired and refinished after removing 2 layers of linoleum.

Lighting - Schoolhouse Electric, all fluorescent GU24 except the pendants (too small for GU24 bulbs). Different ceiling mounts in kitchen, pantry and laundry.

The kitchen is 18.5' x 9.75'. Ceilings are 8'2" high. The pantry is another 7' long and the laundry another 8', with an exterior door. There is a hallway coming off the pantry that leads to a bath and bedroom. The room adjacent to the beadboard hutch is our breakfast room. The formal dining room adjoins the arch in the foreground of the first photo. Total project involved gutting 350 sf to the studs, reframing, rewiring and replumbing.

There is an HD TV with recessed bracket and concealed mini-amplifier feeding a stereo speaker in the ceiling. A stereo speaker with one woofer and two tweeters. Our contractor was able to create a space within the wall where the swing-arm bracket can reside--thus the TV is almost flush with the wall when retracted. We found that professional A/V guys are all over this stuff.

The windows are brand new, based on a period design that I saw on another home a few blocks away. The center lite is fixed and the side lites open in--that is termed a "pull casement" window.

We hung two wood mantel hoods back-to-back with glass cabinets on the sides.

The range is 30 inches wide and there is a 24 inch counter on each side. The range backs up to a raised bar consisting of two 36 inch wide 42 inch high wall cabinets. The total length of the raised bar is six feet. The counter on top of the bar is narrow--only about 18 inches at its widest point. I didn't want to use that bar for another eating area since we already have 2 dining tables in close proximity.

Lighting: My installer supplied the light cans. The pendants are made by Access Lighting, bought as a close-out from lamps-lighting on ebay. The UL (LED pucks, self-adhesive) came from BJ’s - $30 for 6. I pretty much never use the UL, so I am glad I didn’t spend a fortune on the wired UL.
Paint: BM Tyler Taupe.
Pulls: purchased on ebay from Contempo Living (a great seller!)
Floor: we kept the 'old' floor, as it was replaced just before we bought the house by the previous owner. It is just fine (ceramic 12x12 tile) and it covers a good chunk of the first floor so it would be very wasteful and a pain too to replace it.
The crock was made by a local artist, Darren Prodger from Saratoga Clayworks.
Nifty idea: hiding the phone and cell phone charger inside a wall cabinet. The outlet was put through the cabinet side adjacent to the wall, so the regular phone is hidden, and so are the wires for charging mobiles.

The floor plan remained the same to what the previous kitchen was - what I mean by that is that no walls were removed. The previous owner had a eat-in kitchen but with the formal dining room next door, I would've much more preferred more cabinets (especially since there was no pantry closet) and counter space. So the new kitchen now has all 4 walls plus a peninsula. Basically it is 2 L shaped bits. The sink/range walls are 11X9 (old kitchen), and the fridge/12' side walls are 9X8. The peninsula is 5X2.

Floor: BR-111 Amendoim in ¾" solid. It also runs down the hall and into our foyer. It has transformed our main level and we get tons of compliments on it.

More info:
Our lay-out has stayed pretty much the same as before with a few enhancements. Our ceilings are 9 feet and some of the cabinets now extend to the ceiling. The island is slightly larger to accommodate seating for 2. The desk has been replaced with a coffee/breakfast/snack area that has eliminated a lot of traffic in the ‘work zone’ by my kids. Great side benefit to the additional storage on that wall! Also, we added banks of drawers where there were base cabinet shelves for easier access to things. Oh, and I really like the garbage disposal airswitch.
The island cabinets are 18" deep. I didn't use a leg, as I thought it would get in the way. My kitchen is small and the entrance to the room is right there. The final counter is 28"-32" (curved side) x 60". The overhang is 12" deep in the center. The end cabinet on the island (you can see it in the last picture) is 24" deep for the pull-out trash cabinet (I was insistent on getting double bin recycling).

We took the kitchen from an oak that was turning an orange we weren’t crazy about to a painted, distressed and glazed off white. Some of the pics look more yellow (darn lighting). The off-white color shows the more accurate color of cabinets and walls. The upper cabinets were all 30" cabinets that we added crown molding and an undercabinet trim to so they would look taller. We added some wood to the one over the microwave to break up the heights. We added beadboard to the backs of the glass cabinets and on the ends.

We took down a wall and incorporated the hall into the kitchen gaining us about 44 inches of space. All perimeter cabinets were ones we re-used (green not cheap!). All but two were changed in some fashion by my DH.

DIY: We did all the work except for the soapstone/granite install. The total cost was less than $12,000 but we decided to add new Pella windows (installed by DH) since the walls were down so that added $2000.

Cherry Island. This is the one set of cabinets we ordered. It consisted of a bank of drawers, an upper wall cabinet on the end that was turned into a trash pullout, and some panels. DH built a base and made it all fit together. The granite is Crema Bordeaux. DH ran 2 pieces of flat ½ X 4 inch plate steel across the top of the cabinets and extended out to support the granite overhang where the 2 stools are.

Cabinet transformation:

Cabinet paint is antique white milk paint by American Finishes with a watered-down solution of their VanDykeBrown glaze effects. We then put a spray finish of Minwax waterbased polycrylic clear satin finish over it.
Cabinets to the right of the microwave: We took a couple of cabinets, cut them shorter, added the plate shelf, and converted the doors to glass.
Countertop cabinet to the right of the sink: This was constructed from a cabinet that we changed to glass; the upper part of our old oven cabinet turned into a "garage"; and one he just made because I wanted a pullout to put soaps etc in.
Sink base: We bumped out the sink base, first because we were forced to so the sink/faucet would fit; and second because we liked the look. He built the legs from a pic I found. We painted the base behind black so the legs stood out more. Added pullouts for recycling.
Peninsula: On the peninsula, we actually have two cabinets we didn’t mess with and then we took some fronts of pasta bins that we had on an old end cabinet and made 2 deep drawers. We had a narrow door that we turned at an angle and made a cabinet for cookie sheets, etc.
Cabinet to the left of the oven: We made this into a pullout that DH custom made to fit the lids; and the pots do all manage to fit in even tho the cabinet is only 15".
Cabinet to the left of the refrigerator: The cabinet to the left of the frig is a combination of 2 base cabinets (one with 3 drawers and one with 1 drawer and 1 door—turned upside down to make the opening with the 2 vertical doors (which were actually previous drawer fronts). Then we left a cabinet open that we cut apart and put shelves in to make the cookbook shelves. DH built the shelf above the frig to tie the cabinets on either side together. We turned the opening of the cabinet into a "poor man’s coffee bar". Works great to keep it off the countertop but easily accessible. The coffee pot is actually filled by pulling out the handle (not from the top) so that makes life easier.
Display cabinet: We had this display cabinet with the glass doors before so we retro fitted it into this angled wall and added the beadboard inside to match the other cabinets.

Approximate cost: $35-40,000.00 I say "approximate" because the labor portion was part of a whole-house remodel in which we knocked down three walls, built a new dining room and a master suite (adding a bathroom)...so it's hard to splice out the labor costs exactly.

Places I saved: Appliances! Bought the fratelli and futuro futuro online at ajmadison--free shipping and no tax. Samsung fridge-highly rated, very reasonably priced, Dishwasher-closeout from adu.com at $400.00! All I had to do was drive 30 minutes to pick it up. Microwave/Convection--from adu.com closeouts as well. Cabinet Hardware: I went cheap...and don't regret it at all...I like them! Ebay: sink and faucet at well below retail. Recessed lighting from Ikea--it's fabulous and the electrician said no different and in fact better than some "higher end" versions. Saved my original schoolhouse fixture and reused.

Places I splurged: Soapstone! Flooring-high-end Mannington product but I really loved it, and had the red oak toothed in to existing original read oak flooring at a premium..but love the results!

Cabinets were a save and a splurge at the same time. I wanted cherry and was used to Omega and Dynasty products which are very nice...but couldn't afford to outfit my new larger kitchen in that line. Brighton was very similar in quality--almost undetectable differences--and just cheaper enough to sway me. My cabinets were $13,000.00 Full Blumotion soft close, all the bells and whistles I would have gotten in Dynasty.

Construction Timeline: Again, this was a whole-house renovation where we remodeled every room on the main level except for one bathroom. We reconfigured one bedroom, added a closet, converted one bedroom plus the garage into a master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet, converted an existing aluminum sunroom into a new dining room. Installed an additional back door and landing, four new windows, moved and restored two existing built-in china cabinets, re-wired much of the house including moving the electrical panel and installing recessed lighting throughout. And of course, gutting and replacing the kitchen--we also knocked down three walls to create a more open kitchen/breakfast/dining plan and a wider entry to the living room. The first hammer fell in demo on June 23. Today we passed our final inspection. An amazing amount of work in such a short time. We lived here and homeschooled our kids here through the whole thing.

Budget: Our total costs for all labor, services and materials from soup to nuts (and we kept meticulous track of every purchase and cost) was $200,000.00 (not including original architect

Overall Timeline: Made my first calls to architects and design/build firms right after the new year. Had contracted with an architect/build firm by the end of January. Design began in earnest right away with the finished design ready at the beginning of May. Spent another 20 days shopping the plan around and we decided to go with a contractor rather than the architect's firm. Permitting was a real PITA and took longer than expected--if you're in Montgomery County, MD --build in extra time for this--it took us two weeks and four trips back to the permitting department just to get the plans pushed through and we weren't even changing our existing footprint or building new structure!

Although the kitchen was the last part constructed, it's the first we've moved back into. As we move back into the rest of the new spaces and unpack our pod I'll be posting pictures of the whole project for those interested.

Service Providers to recommend:
Well, my contractor was FABULOUS for this whole house remodel. We finished on time and on budget. They were clean, courteous, communicative and creative. If you live in the greater Washington DC area feel free to contact me and I can recommend. Similar raves about the electrician--and this was a BIG electrical job (we pretty much rewired the whole house.) Very competetive pricing from both of these guys too...

Stitches Etc. in Timonium MD: Can't say enough about these folks. I didn't end up buying from them because I chose different brands, but they specialize in Bertazzoni, Aga, Ventahood, Bosch, Miele and a few others. Incredible customer service--nice family-run business. http://www.stitchesetc.biz/index.html John was very knowledgable and patient with me on venting and hoods, and his wife was most helpful with the ranges...they are true enthusiasts.

Cabinet Discounters in Columbia, MD: I ended up with these guys after going all over town with one plan, being unhappy, and then starting from scratch. Matt Simms was my sales rep and was a perfect match for me because I knew what I wanted and he helped me realize it--he wasn't trying to make his own artistic statement on MY kitchen! Great communication, follow-up and customer service--including terrific suggestions along the way.

Bode Floors in Columbia MD: Again, customer service can't be beat. I kissed a lot of flooring frogs before I found this prince(ss). Linda Lawrence was my saleswoman. Installation was just typical--nothing special, nothing agregiously wrong.

Old Mill Soapstone near Charlottesville, VA: Sally O'Brien proprietor. Again, just one of the nicest people. She also quoted me the best price but for logistical reasons I went local instead with...

Carapace Stone in Savage MD: contracted through Cabinet Discounters with Creativeincounters as the fabricator. I got to pick my slabs and was present at templating. Happy with the results and price was competetive enough.

Appliance Distributors Unlimited (adu.com)--several locations in the MD/DC area: Check out their website closeouts. I was always treated like a first-class customer by their web sales rep and at their warehouse even though I was picking up heavily discounted appliances from their website. They treated me like a queen anyway.

DIY Painted Bittersweet Chocolate Kitchen

Wall paint: Benjamin Moore Iced Marble, a really soft (but not sweet) blue-gray not unlike Silver Sage.

Painting Supplies:

Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Alkyd (oil-based) in Bittersweet Chocolate
Purdy angled brushes
Thick plastic dropcloths
Sandpaper
Mineral spirits and rags for clean-up as you go

Painting Instructions:

Remove doors.
Clean with soap and water.
Lightly sand, only where needed.
Remove dust with a tack cloth.

Rest each door on its bottom edge. Do not paint that edge -- you'll do it once the doors are re-hung.

Paint the backs first with a thin coat of Satin Impervo. Thin coats give more of a handrubbed look and also avoid drips. If you do see some drips, try to catch them early -- once the paint starts to dry, you'll make a mess trying to smooth them out. Let dry at least overnight, preferably a few nights to avoid smudges when you flip the doors around.
Paint the fronts in the same way.
Let cure for as long as you can stand it. A week would be ideal.
In the meantime, paint the cabinet boxes. I didn't paint the insides, and I've never regretted it.
After a weeks gone by, re-hang the doors. Paint the bottom edge of each. Do any touch-up.
Depending on your wood, the paint may keep absorbing in certain places. I kept the paint can in my kitchen for a month, doing quick touch-ups wherever necessary.

I didn't do two full coats of paint like many people suggested. For one, the Satin Impervo covers amazingly. The dark color helped -- I imagine a light color would require more coats. But also, the thinner the paint, the more it looks like stain. If you glop it on, which I accidentally did in some places, it doesn't look as much like a pro job.

If you have oak, keep in mind, you will see grain through the paint. If you'd rather not, you'll have to use some kind of putty to fill the grain, then prime, then paint. I just didn't have the energy for it, and it turns out, I love the look -- people mistake it for a handrubbed stain all the time.

You can see faint brushstrokes, which I love. The Benjamin Moore Satin Alkyd is incredibly forgiving paint, and I believe it would've self-leveled more if I laid the doors flat while painting and drying. I didn't want to encourage that, so I left them standing up.

For "cutting in", I never use tape. But I live and die by angled Purdy brushes and a steady hand. I press and ease the tips of the bristles up to the edge, then pull slowly. Another hint: Don't hold the brush way down on the end of the handle, where it looks like you're supposed to hold it. You'll have less control, and your wrist will fatigue much more quickly that way. Hold it up higher, closer to the bristles.

I'm so happy with how the cabinets have stood up over time. Not a single chip or scratch! To be honest, I cut so many corners in the prep (by choosing not to prime), I thought for sure I'd be dealing with the aftermath now. I credit the paint and patience for 100% of the success. Seriously, this paint is the real deal.

Farm table - custom made by our mill worker from reclaimed oak that he had in storage for over 20 years. Once built, he fumed the table to give it an even more weathered look. It's 9 feet long, has built in drawers on either side, and uses spline joinery to keep the four top planks together. The chairs are the 1934 dining chair and 1956 armchair from the Sundance Catalog. DWR has a similar dining chair called the Marais AC.
Sofa - from Room & Board. It's the Townsend model in a custom fabric.

Favorites: Pull out trash, pull out cookies sheet drawer and another pull out cookie sheet drawer that we are using for our most used pans and skillets. Best drawer ever. Love the pantry and I've never had one. Will probably add a third door to the pantry because there is shelving back there and it's way too hard to use. Original plan was a sliding rack to hold cans, etc but that never happened and I like it the way it is. Spice rack - I spent hours on the internet and in stores looking for a large rack. Finally made it to the container store and they had the components to do an over the door rack with as many shelves as you need. I may add one on the other door for can storage and free up some of the shelves for dishes. I like the two work stations at the desk. I still have two kids at home, 12 & 14, and the extra work spot and computer are so handy when 2 or 3 of us needs/wants to be on the computer at the same time. Very handy.

Regrets: The "planner" I used wasn't specifically a kitchen planner. She did have some good ideas and she was the subcontrator for the kitchen cabinets. That turned out to be a 4 month nightmare. Ended up hiring someone else to finish and rebuild most of the cabinets. What's done is done but I'll never (famous last words) have work done like that without references. The contractor recommended her but she flaked on them too. When planning the kitchen I expressed a concern to her about not having enough cabinets and she did some calculations and told me I had way more than I started with. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The kitchen is full and I still have boxes full of dishes. I don't think I would have designed the kitchen differently because I love it the way it is but I wish I had known. The refrigerator: we chose a counter depth 36" wide. I really wanted a 48" and the husband vetoed that. Dumb move. This refrigerator holds so much less than the old one. Now we have our old refrigerator running outside in our old laundry room off of the carport. The island: I wish I had overhang on both ends. There is enough room to have done that and we use all 3 sides but there isn't any overhang on the refrigerator end. I also don't like the pendant lights over the breakfast table. I'm thinking of replacing them with a ceiling fan. This room gets hot when it's a 100 outside.

Denim Insulation. First, your project has to be down to the studs since this rolls in like typical fiberglass insulation. Then, the cost is about 10% more than standard. For us, it came out to about $200 more. In the grand-scheme of things, $200 wasn't much. We bought ours at Greenmaker Supply in Chicago, because we live just to the west. We also went with FSC certified wood from them.

Pantry: Our reach in pantry has custom made cafe doors which match our cabinets and a pendant light which matches the pendants over our island and in the nook. The overall dimensions are that it is 32" wide by 25" deep. The shelves were built specifically to house the CanSolidator which I bought at Costco after seeing one on the BAH forum. The bottom shelf is 20" off the floor and then moving up from there, I have a 17" shelf, 13", 13" and 17". The two 13" shelves are where the CanSolidator is. On the very bottom shelf, I bought wire baskets for bread and "snacks" and then hanging baskets for my dish towels. The cafe doors were custom made. The doors swing both ways. I believe the hardware is called a cafe door hinge.
Island is 54" deep and a little over 9 ft long.

I started my makeover about 8 weeks ago with painting my almond fridge black. I refinished the cabinets with a cream paint and umber glaze. I wanted a heavily glazed finish (yes, I know it looks dirty - but I like it!) The only appliance I replaced was the gas range. I was going to keep my granite tile on my island, but decided to put the Baltic brown on it once we got the new granite on the perimeter cabinets. I also planned to keep my wallpaper, but after I got the cabinets finished I didn't think there was enough contrast between the walls and the cabinets so I painted the walls too.

This was a completely DIY remodel and I did almost all of it myself with a wee bit of help from my husband. We also repainted the laundry room to match and added overhead cabinets in there in place of an old closet maid shelf.

My total between the 2 rooms was about $6500.

I put a basecoat of zinsser oil primer on the granite squares before I sprayed them with the bronze paint. I don't know how they'll hold up over time, but I figured the painting was worth a try. If it doesn't work - then I'll have to chip out the old granite square and find a tile the right size to put in there! However, the paint seems to be sticking fine and I don't really get the backsplash too dirty where I'll have to wash those tiles often.

I used Fleck Stone paint to paint the lightswitch plates. I happened to have a can on my shelf from quite a few years ago and it matched nicely with the tiles.

I used the epoxy appliance paint that I found at Lowes. I can't remember now who makes it - but its labeled appliance paint. To be honest - that is one thing I will NEVER do again. It was a major pain - the mist is very fine and carries everywhere. I started out in my breakfast room and realized the fine spray was going under my plastic sheeting and was all over my wood floor. I moved it outside on my deck to finish it. It was very hard to get an even coat and I wound up having to put a poly coat over it to get the finish to look nice. So in hind sight - it was alot of trouble, but it saved me the cost of buying a new fridge.

I added 2 boxes to change the height level of my upper cabinets and put up crown molding. I added decorative feet, boxed molding to the end cabinets and decorative baseboard molding under the granite and decorative baseboard molding to the desk so it looks like furniture. I took out the leaded glass on my corner cabinet door and put in a painted piece of decorative sheet metal.

I sanded the cabinets to remove the old shiny poly coat, then I primed 1 coat of Zinnser oil based paint. Next I put on 3 coats of BM White sand. I painted an outline in all the routed edges using BM Bittersweet Chocolate. I didn't do any sanding to reveal the old stain. I tried that on my test piece and it looked more rustic than I wanted. I did distress them with a hammer, nail holes and hit them with a bag full of lug nuts. I brushed the glaze over the paint and let it sit for a few minutes and then I wiped the glaze off leaving it heavier in some areas than others, and letting it stay in the dented ares. (I found a tip on here from soneone and I can't remember who - but she used Viva papertowels with her glazing and that's what I used to remove my glazing. They were just the right softness.)

What I Feel I Need to Justify:
1. My big, huge, barrier island. I posted a layout months ago and rhome410 and buehl both pointed out that my island would be a barrier between the range and the refrigerator. Thanks to rhome, I slid the fridge from the right end of that wall to the left which makes the trip from oven to fridge shorter. Thank you, rhome! My island still would be considered a barrier island, but the fact is that it really works for my space and my family.
2. Outlets vs plugmolds: I was torn here. For me it was outlets vs. hanging cords. I think most people who use plugmolds probably don’t keep the appliances plugged in, and as much as I’d like to say we unplug the toaster and coffee maker, we don’t. So, I just decided—it’s a kitchen, it has outlets. Let it be.
3. Giving up a separate, formal dining room—DH couldn’t care less, he was really the one pushing to lose the wall between the original kitchen and dining room. He doesn’t see the need for a formal dining room for us—we rarely have formal dinner parties. My "vision" was to make the dining area a little more formal. Not sure I pulled it off. Either way, this layout really works for us and we’re hoping to be in this house for a long time.
4. Airswitch—yes, I know the current finish is glaringly silver in a sea of brown! I ordered a special Mocha Bronze finish for the button. Still haven’t gotten the button. It’s on backorder and I was told that they now don’t have any idea when it will be available!! Ugh.
5. Molding oddities—because of the slight drop in the ceiling in the "alcove," the crown molding is at different heights—you can tell when looking at the upper cabinet to the right of the stove. Couldn’t be helped.

What Had To Be That I’ve Grown to Love:
1. Originally, the entirety of the wall between the original kitchen and dining room was supposed to come out; same with that shallow wall next to the doors leading to my backyard. One couldn’t be completely removed because of a major pipe. and the other couldn’t come out because it’s a structural support. That pipe is also the reason for the protrusion from that wall to the ceiling. Though disappointed about this at first, I now love how the cabinets and counter wrap around that wall; and with that on one end and the other wall on the other, a somewhat cozy alcove is created for that space. I think of these things now as architectural details.
2. Island countertop—my original vision was a beautiful, rich wenge edge grain countertop. Got a sample, LOVED it. Literally fondled it for an evening. My GC and DH were vehemently against wood for the island. Despite my assurances of super-durable, water-resistant finishes and the fact that I would welcome some dents and scratches as patina, they wouldn’t budge. I could’ve forged ahead without their approval, but decided to see if I could first find something that would be a happy compromise. I did—a granite called Cabernet. It reads a pretty flat chocolate brown with faint black movement. It gives the same general look as the wood, though the wood would’ve provided such a wonderful warmth that only wood can give. That said, I’m really happy with the granite.
3. The stools—this is very, very minor. Ideally, I would have chosen a dark brown woven stool, probably backless—similar to those seagrass Pottery Barn stools. However, cost, durability, and comfort had to come into play. With little kids, I just couldn’t see having backless stools and I with as much use as they’re getting, I worried about crumbs and such. So, these will do for now.

What I LOVE:
1. The sink—copper sink, 14 gauge, Dark Smoke finish from Copper Sinks Online. Love it. Everyone who sees it loves it.
2. Faucet—Whitehaus New Vision Curved Handle. Retails for over $700, got it for under $300 because it’s been discontinued. I worked directly with someone at Whitehaus via email and he was wonderful…found the matching soap dispenser at a lower price for me, too.
3. Cabinet hardware—ordered from Rejuvenation. Looks ORB, but is burnished brass.
4. Paint color—I just really like the way it works with the browns, greys, and white in the kitchen. It’s Benjamin Moore Nantucket Grey. Reads mossy grey/green.
5. The tumbled marble mosaic. This was a last minute decision when my GC said that taking the carrara slab all the way up to the ceiling (around the hood) was a bad idea. Turns out I LOVE the way the mosaic looks around the hood and I love how the band around the rest of the perimeter turned out.
6. The Fratelli—we’re not gourmets, but I prefer the look of the pro-style ranges. The Fratelli was a great option for us, not a bank-breaker, but great visual appeal and great function (as far as I can tell!). I really love the look of it, the "dainty" knobs especially.

What I Waver On Daily:
1. Pendant lights over island—LOVED these when they were up without anything else in the space and most of the time I still love them, but there are moments when I wonder if they’re all wrong!
2. Carrara marble—while I do love it, sometimes I worry that it’s a tad too grey for the white cabinets; I also think I would’ve been happy with the mosaic between the range and the hood versus the slab, but the slab will be easier to keep clean. I do like the slab under the Advantium—where it’s very nook-like.
3. Using different hardware on the cabinets in the dining space. I fell in love with the idea of a pendant pull, but didn’t want them everywhere. Sometimes I love them, sometimes I think I should’ve just kept everything the same.
4. Pantry Pullouts—when I first loaded these I thought they were a pain—too rigid storage-wise and I wished I had just done tall cabinets with pullout shelves. Now, though, I can see their value and I can reach the top on tippy-toes (I’m 5’6"). Could still go either way on this. Don’t love the hardware placement on them, but that really goes under a new category—Don’t Love It, But Can Live With It.
5. Position of cabinets between kitchen and dining—they’re not centered on that short wall, but mimic the cabinets across from them, by the dining window. I let my GC win this one and I sometimes wish I had pushed for them to be center on that wall.
6. Don’t really waver on this—I wish I had done all drawers on the window side perimeter. I just don’t think I gave it enough thought. Oh well.

Misc. Thoughts:
1. Why the gold/brown finishes vs. silver/chrome? While I love the silver/chrome finishes with the white cabinets, I gravitate toward browns and reds and yellows. These are the hues in our family room that’s open to the kitchen. That’s why I thought burnished or antiqued brass tones would work better for us.
2. I’m still trying to warm up the space. I know I could’ve gone with rich wood cabinets, but that part of the house is so dark—despite all the windows and doors, it gets only filtered natural light. Plus, I was always drawn to the white kitchens in all the magazines. I just felt it was the right way to go for this space.
3. Have contemplated putting corbels under the glass uppers…thoughts anyone?
4. Big blank wall between fridge and opening to mudroom—was originally going to put a black bench there. Now I’m thinking of putting two rows of white magnetic strips there for children’s artwork, holiday cards, reminders, etc.
5. Used magnetic paint on the shallow wall near the doors leading to the backyard (and on one wall in our mudroom). Not very strong, though, so I need to work on getting stronger magnets. Those plastic magnetic photo pockets (if anyone knows what I’m talking about) stick pretty good.
6. Will likely incorporate some window treatments at some point. Can’t decide if I should try to find a fabric that would work for roman shades or do a dark brown woven shade.
7. Though it’s counter depth, the fridge sticks out more than I expected.

Cabinets custom built by AYR Cabinetry out of Nappanee Indiana (they ship country wide). They're a mix of maple and Cherry with walnut accents. A shameless plug for them - they were FANTASTIC to work for, nothing was impossible and I don't have a single filler or wasted inch in the entire kitchen!
All new custom cabinets (slab doors) in 3 finishes (maple, cherry and walnut) with mortise-and-tenon cabinet frames and French dovetailed, hand-fitted drawers and catalyzed hand wiped finishes. All cabinet backs are 1/2" and all shelves are 3/4"

Cabinets: Perimeter Cabinets custom-built with BM Simply White paint. Island cabinets are custom-built Alder, stained Sherwin-Williams "Walnut Wainscot" SW 3120-B.
Countertops: Perimeter countertop is Black Minas Soapstone from Dorado Soapstone.
Island countertop is Honed Statuario Marble

My island cabinet dimensions are 8'3" x 5'1" (that includes base moulding).
The marble countertop measures 8'5" x 5'4".

All of the trim throughout the home is made from MDF. My finish carpenter said that if I had decided to do the coffered box-beam ceiling out of wood, it would've cost 10x's as much! Yikes!

Cabinets: Shiloh cabinetry. The perimeter is Oxford painted maple in ivory with pewter glaze and the island is painted black with weathered, distressed, sand through.
Countertop: 3 different granites - Red Dragon, Absolute Black and Black Mosaic Gold

Part of our remodel included a 400 sq. ft. addition to expand the size of our family room and kitchen. The biggest thorn in my side for this whole project was working around a dropped beam and 2 columns that had to stay because they were the structural support for an upstairs bay window. We have decided to arch out the structure and will be covering it in antiqued brick......this is my best hope at being able to (as another GWer said) "Embrace my beam"!!

Step by Step - Add copyright text to your images using IrfanView

IrfanView (pronounced "EarfanView") is a free, light-weight photo editing program that will easily add a copyright image to your photos... even dozens at a time! It takes just a few minutes to setup.. then all your photos will be tagged with your own copyright information.

Step1:

Download and install IrfanView from: http://www.irfanview.com/

Step2:

Configure IrfanView to add watermarks. (You can skip this step if you have already configured for watermarks.)

File => Batch Conversion/Rename
The "Batch conversion" window should now be visible:
Check "Use advanced options", then click the Advanced button
You should now see the "Set for all images" window:
Check "Add overlay text", then click the Settings button.
You should now see the "Add overlay text to image" window.
Now the CREATIVE/FUN part starts.... where you can add your text, change the font, size and color, and decide where in the images to put the copyright text.
See the Final Thoughts section at the bottom of this posting for hints about selecting overlay text parameters.
This example is for an image that is 400pixels wide and 300 pixels high:
Select Left bottom, increase the width to 300.
Type text similar to "Copyright ©2008 starpooh" (use the "Append Copyright" button to get the © symbol)
Click "Choose Font" and select Arial, size 14, color is white.

Click OK to save the overlay text (the "Add overlay text to image" window).
Click OK again in the "Set for all images" window
You should now be back in the "Batch conversion" window:
If you want your original images copied into watermarked images then check the "Batch conversion - Rename result files" radio button.
Set the name pattern as you wish, or let it default.
Then set the output directory.
Your basic setup is now complete.

Step3:

Select photos to be watermarked.

Use the "Look in" section to browse to your photos. Highlight all images to be watermarked.
Click the "Add" button to add the images to the "Input Files" section.
Click the "Start Batch" button.
You should now see the "Batch conversion done" window.
Click Exit.
Your watermarked photos are now in the output directory that you specified in the "Batch conversion" window.

Final Thoughts:

Here are examples of various IrfanView overlay parameters for various image sizes.

Example#1:
Image size: 400 x 300
Select Left bottom, increase the width to 300. Font is Arial, bold, size 14, color is white.
Example#1:
Image size: 1024x768
Select Left bottom, increase the width to 700, increase height to 200.
Font is Verdana, bold, size 32 color is gray.
